Western Colorado University Japan Program
Overview
In partnership with Western Colorado University, this developing 10-day academic field program combines skiing, cultural immersion, sustainability, and experiential learning in Japan. Students explore Japanese mountain culture, environmental perspectives, tourism, and the relationship between traditional and modern Japan through direct experience, discussion, and travel. The program includes time in both Tokyo and Hokkaido and is designed to encourage thoughtful travel, global perspective, cultural awareness, and personal growth.
Who This Trip Is For
Western Colorado University students, sophomore level or higher. This program is still being developed for the 2027/2028 season. It is not currently open for applications. Details will be shared as the program takes shape.
Itinerary
Tokyo
Arrival and Orientation
Students arrive in Tokyo, get oriented, and begin engaging with Japanese urban culture, food, and daily life.
Hokkaido
Mountain Experience
The program moves north to Hokkaido for skiing, mountain culture, and experiential learning in a winter mountain environment.
Throughout
Cultural and Academic Programming
Discussions, reflections, and direct experiences around sustainability, tourism, the outdoor industry, and Japanese cultural perspectives are woven throughout the trip.
